What Is a Motorcycle Bill of Sale?
A motorcycle bill of sale records the private sale of a motorcycle, scooter, dirt bike, or ATV. It works like a car bill of sale but has to account for details that matter on two wheels: engine displacement, which drives licensing and insurance classification; aftermarket exhausts, fairings, and performance parts that may or may not be included; and whether the machine is street-legal or off-road only.
Off-road machines are the most common source of confusion. Dirt bikes and ATVs are titled in some states and not in others, and a bike sold with no title is difficult or impossible for a buyer to register later. The bill of sale is often the only ownership document that exists for those machines, which makes filling in the VIN and the engine number carefully more important here than in almost any other private sale.

1. 1. Seller and Buyer
MOTORCYCLE BILL OF SALE. Date of Sale: [DATE OF SALE]. 2. 2. Motorcycle Description
The Seller sells and transfers to the Buyer the following motorcycle (the "Motorcycle"): Year: [YEAR]. Make: [MAKE]. Model: [MODEL]. 3. 3. Odometer or Hour Meter Disclosure
The Seller certifies that the odometer of the Motorcycle now reads [ODOMETER READING] miles, with no tenths, and that to the best of the knowledge of the Seller it reflects the actual mileage, unless one of the following is checked: [ ] mileage exceeds the mechanical limits of the odometer; [ ] the reading is NOT the actual mileage — WARNING: ODOMETER DISCREPANCY; [ ] the Motorcycle has no functioning odometer. For off-road machines measured in hours, the hour meter reads [HOUR METER READING] hours. Date of reading: [READING DATE]. Federal law requires a written odometer disclosure on transfer of most motor vehicles and provides penalties for a false statement, and where the state title includes its own odometer section that section must also be completed. If the odometer or speedometer unit has been replaced, state the date and the reading at replacement: [ODOMETER REPLACEMENT DETAILS].
4. 4. Purchase Price and Payment
The total purchase price of the Motorcycle is [PURCHASE PRICE] ([PRICE IN WORDS] dollars). Payment is made by [PAYMENT METHOD, e.g., cash, cashier check, bank transfer]. Select one. (a) Paid in full: the Seller acknowledges receiving the full purchase price on [PAYMENT DATE]. 5. 5. Title, Liens, and Off-Road Status

If a lien exists, the Seller will pay it off and deliver a written lien release to the Buyer within [LIEN RELEASE PERIOD, e.g., ten days]. Where the Motorcycle is titled, the Seller will sign the certificate of title over to the Buyer at the time of sale and provide any state transfer form or inspection certificate required in [STATE]. Where the Motorcycle is an off-road machine that is not titled in [STATE], the Seller confirms that fact here and provides the following available ownership evidence instead: [MSO / PRIOR BILL OF SALE / REGISTRATION / NONE]. The Buyer acknowledges that a machine sold without a title may not be eligible for street registration and accepts that risk.
6. 6. As-Is Sale and No Warranty
THE MOTORCYCLE IS SOLD "AS IS," WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING NO WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY AND NO WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. The Buyer has inspected the Motorcycle, or has been given the opportunity to inspect it and have it examined by a mechanic, and accepts it in its present condition, including the condition of the tires, brakes, chain or belt, suspension, and any aftermarket components. The Seller makes no representation about the roadworthiness, emissions compliance, or noise compliance of any aftermarket exhaust or modification, and the Buyer is responsible for bringing the Motorcycle into compliance where required. The Seller is not responsible for any mechanical failure or defect discovered after the transfer date. This provision does not excuse any intentional misrepresentation about condition, mileage, or accident history.
7. 7. Transfer, Insurance, and Release of Liability
Ownership and all risk of loss pass to the Buyer on [TRANSFER DATE] at [TRANSFER TIME], when possession and the keys are delivered. The Buyer confirms that insurance meeting the minimum requirements of [STATE] is in place before riding the Motorcycle on any public road, and acknowledges being responsible for holding any motorcycle endorsement required to operate it. The Seller will remove the license plate unless state law requires it to stay with the Motorcycle, and will file a notice of transfer or release of liability with the state motor vehicle agency within [RELEASE FILING PERIOD, e.g., five days] of the sale. Replaced speedometer units are common on older bikes, and that makes the displayed number meaningless without a note. Sellers should disclose a replacement and check the discrepancy box where it applies. Buyers should compare the reading with service records and chain, sprocket, and tire wear.
Aftermarket Parts Listed
States which modifications and accessories are included and which the seller keeps.
Aftermarket exhausts, seats, and bars are the most common source of post-sale arguments, because the seller often intends to swap the stock parts back on. Write down what stays with the bike and what does not. Buyers should also note that a loud or uncertified exhaust may fail inspection in their state.
Off-Road and No-Title Disclosure
Flags when the machine is not titled and identifies what ownership evidence exists instead.
Buying a dirt bike or ATV with no title can mean it cannot be registered for road use, cannot easily be insured, and is much harder to resell. As-Is Sale

Sellers should still disclose known defects, since as-is does not cover concealment.
Transfer Date and Insurance
Fixes when responsibility passes and requires the buyer to be insured before riding.
A buyer who rides away uninsured leaves both parties exposed, and the seller name may still be on the registration when it matters. Sellers should record the time of transfer, file the release of liability quickly, and consider asking to see proof of insurance before handing over the keys.
